David Nafe Kerr papers, 1942-1993 1942-1993

Photocopies of diaries, clippings, award certificates, and questionnaires of David Nafe Kerr from his service in U.S. Army Medical Corps units during World War II, especially General Hospital 21. Also includes original diary and edited typescript of the diary of Kerr's experiences in World War II, from February 11, 1942 to April 27, 1944. Portrait of Kerr and his wife Lois Kerr (early 1942) as frontispiece. Military personnel file of Kerr and documents kept by him with the contents (including photocopies of Kerr's medical training and residency and documents pertaining to his postwar service with the US Army Reserve unit, 21st General Hospital. Framed artifacts: (1) order for award of the Silver Star for gallantry in action, awarded to Kerr on February 2, 1944 together with the star medallion itself in a gilt frame, 18.5 x 13 inches, and (2) printed text of Kerr's letter to his mother, June 5, 1944 (eve of the "D Day" invasion of the Normandy coast by Allied forces), 13 x 10 inches. Terms of outright donation of gift supercede the limited rights of earlier accession of photocopies, 91-055, May 8, 1991.

David Nafe Kerr, a 1941 graduate of the Washington University School of Medicine, was among the original group of officers activated to serve with the 21st General Hospital in January 1942. By the following January, the 21st was just settling into its first overseas assignment in Bou Hanifia and Kerr felt too far removed from the war.
